At present it is clear that nucleoli are multifunctional cell organelles and participate in the cell proliferation, resting state, differentiation, maturation, aging and death. Therefore, they also represent very useful morphological markers of these cell states under physiological, pathological and experimental conditions. One of important nucleolar functions related to the mentioned cell states represents the transcription of ribosomal RNA and assembly of pre-ribosomal particles. Thus nucleoli participate in the creation of the cytoplasmic translation machinery necessary for the cell life and function. Although main nucleolar functions are already...

Effects of SDF-1α/CXCR4 on vascular smooth muscle cells and bone marrow mesenchymal cells in a rat carotid artery balloon injury model

J Appl Biomed 9:129-141, 2011 | DOI: 10.2478/v10136-011-0001-8
Bone marrow mensenchyme cells (BMSCs) can differentiate into endothelial progenitor cells which then migrate to injured sites for the repair of neointima, and stromal cell-derived factor-1α (SDF-1α) can mediate the migration of CXCR4 expressing stem/progenitor cells to injured sites for pair. Protein and mRNA expression of SDF-1α and CXCR4 were determined by RT-PCR, Western blot and ELISA. Immediately after common carotid artery balloon injury, the mRNA expression of SDF-1α in vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) first increased and then decreased 7 days later. VSMCs transfected with SDF-1α siRNA did not express SDF-1α...
Gentamicin bound to the nanofibre microdispersed oxidized cellulose in the treatment of deep surgical site infections

J Appl Biomed 9:143-149, 2011 | DOI: 10.2478/v10136-009-0033-5
The aim of this experimental in vivo study was to examine the effect of topically-used gentamicin bound to microdispersed oxidized cellulose (MDOC) in nanofibre form in the treatment of deep surgical site infections and to compare it with Garamycin Schwamm®. Twelve domestic swine were used in a model of a full-thickness infected dermal wound. The effectiveness of both forms of gentamicin were tested in wound infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli. The effectiveness of gentamicin-MDOC and Garamycin Schwamm® were comparable according to microbiological culture findings, with...

Micronuclei can be used as markers of past radiation exposure, but few pertinent studies have dealt with alpha radiation. Here we report on micronuclei in lymphocytes from uranium miners, comparing some that are currently active and others that retired 15-20 years ago. Their radiation exposure is assumed to come mainly from radon and its decay products in the air breathed at the work place.Current miners showed a greater micronucleus frequency than former miners. This can be attributed to their recent radiation exposure, while the lower frequency in the former miners probably results from the disappearance of potentially micronucleus containing...

Illegal poisoning of wildlife and domestic animals is a worldwide issue. The carbamates primarily used as pesticides are often misused for such a purpose. In this study, 181 birds, mammals and baits were analysed over the period 2004-09 for possible intoxication by carbamates. Intoxication by carbamate carbofuran was diagnosed in 89 cases, and in another 19 cases (nine Wild Boars and 10 Bisons) intoxication with another carbamate - methomyl - was proven. Incidental ingestion of the marten bait was the main cause of intoxication. Although the distribution of carbofuran was prohibited in 2007, no decline in the number of intoxicated animals in the following...

In order to contribute to a better understanding of the mechanism of action of oximes, we evaluated the affinities of 10 new oximes, derived from pyridine-imidazol bicycled systems, for human acetylcholinesterase (HssAChE) complexed with tabun, by estimating their docking energy values and comparing of the values obtained to known oximes using the software Molegro Virtual Docker (MVD)®. We evaluated the influence of the position of the oxime group as substituent in the structures and, also, the influence of the oxime group syn-anti isomery on the docking score values for all the molecules studied. Results suggest that: the affinities...
